Western North Carolina has over 2,000 miles of public water for your trout fishing pleasure, most found in areas noted for natural beauty. There are approximately 1,000 miles of "Hatchery Supported" or stocked streams, 1,000 miles of "Wild" or native water, "Catch and Release" streams, and over 35 miles of "Delayed Harvest" water in which fly fishers can polish catch and release skills on stocked trout for 6 months of the year and keep fish for the remainder. Additionally, there are around 2,000 miles of trout waters that are on private lands.
The Yadkin Valley Wine Region offers anglers of all skill levels a great opportunity to experience the wonders of this beautiful valley. Enjoy the gorgeous scenery on a fishing outing to Stone Mountain or in one of Watauga Countys trout streams.
If you want to spend a day angling for Brook, Brown, or Rainbow trout but dont want to travel to far then Stone Mountain State Park, just north of Elkin, is the place to go. There are plenty of wild trout streams along with delayed-harvest streams in the park. The East-Prong of Roaring River is the largest stream in the state park offering over two miles of streams.
The Mitchell River between Kapps Mill and the old Reynolds estate in Devotion has become an area for good trout. Kapps Mill is easily accessible from Elkin.
Watauga County offers some of the best fishing in the region. The area around Boone, Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain offers multiple streams of wild and delayed-harvest trout.
