Make a Difference

One only has to look around their community to see how they can make a difference. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are young boys or girls being neglected? No matter where you live, there's a need nearby. The people of Elkin, as in most small towns, roll up their sleeves to help others. Sometimes they act alone and sometimes they enlist their friends, family and co-workers. In a rural commnunity a person has a greater chance of truly making a difference.

Anyone. Young and old, individuals and groups, anyone can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as helping build affordable housing for those in need or collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless. Or it might be as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or mentoring a young boy or girl to fulfill their potential.

Upper Yadkin Valley Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to the elimination of homelessness and poverty housing from the Upper Yadkin Valley. Founded on the belief that all people deserve a decent and affordable place to live in dignity and safety, Habitat pursues its vision to make decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides mentors for children from Yadkin Valley, Forsyth and Davie Counties. Their mission is to provide mentors to children from primarily single-parent families in order to provide the extra time and attention the children need to fulfill their potential. The boys and girls are primarily either from single parent families or a grandparent who is raising the child. The volunteer mentors are men and women who are seeking to make a difference in a child's life. The volunteers are reflective of the entire spectrum of professions and ethnic groups.
