Kayaking or canoeing in northwestern North Carolina and the historic New River

Northwestern North Carolina, and especially the peaceful and historic New River (an American Heritage River) in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, offers a wide variety of canoeing and kayaking opportunities for people of all skill levels.

Kayaking or canoeing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while choosing your level of adventure. Keeping your canoe moving downstream is easy on most streams. You just have to keep the boat pointed in the way you want to go, and let the river do the work. If Class II-IV excitement is more your speed, try kayaking through the hills of the New River in West Virginia. Its loaded with big, bouncy waves and breathtaking scenery. The river swells with spring rains, becoming the largest-volume run in the East!

The New River is approximately 320 miles long, spanning through North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. The New River begins at the confluence of the North Fork New River and South Fork New River in Ashe County North Carolina and flows up through the Iron Mountains of Virginia and into West Virginia. Even though the rivers name is the New River, it is widely believed to be one of the oldest in the world, second only to the Nile River. Geologists confirm that it is indeed very old, and probably the oldest in North America because its course runs from south to north, against the topography of the Appalachian Mountains, thus making most believe that the river pre-existed the mountains and surrounding land formation.
