Bicycling in North Carolina

From the mountains to the sea, North Carolinas varied terrain, quiet back roads, and temperate climate make it a great place to bike. Each year, bicycle shops, clubs, and other organizations host a variety of bicycle events across the state.  So get on your bike and enjoy the endless opportunities for cycling in North Carolina!

New trails have been built near the town of Wilkesboro at the W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir. This area lies just east of the Blue Ridge in the Foothills region. The Dark Mountain trails are being built through a partnership with The Brushy Mountain Cyclists Club and The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The mountains of North Carolina offer a wide range of experiences from hilly terrain, to rough tracks or regularly visited mountain bike trails. Different trails offer different challenge levels. Cycle North Carolina (CNC) A Cross-State Bicycle Tour

Cycle North Carolina is a week-long bicycle tour that takes place in mid-October when the air is cool and the colors make every scene picturesque. Each year nearly a thousand participants pedal their way from the foothills of the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains to the coast taking in the best of North Carolina's historic sites, state and national parks, museums, and points of interest. In addition to all there is to see, several communities selected for overnight stays, host evening entertainment and showcase their unique and diverse cultures. The promotion of good health and fitness, while providing economic benefit to rural communities and a natural presentation of this state's scenic beauty, has been the objective of this successful bicycling event, since 1999. To find out more about this tour named "One of the Best Bicycling Events in America" by the League of American Bicyclists.

Presently stretches from Coffee Tavern or CVS trailheads in North Wilkesboro to the Wilkes Heritage Museum Trailhead in Wilkesboro approximately 2 miles. Eventually (like 2010) your journey will not have to end thereyou will be able to enjoy your stroll to Smoot Park (in North Wilkesboro) and then along the Yadkin (in Wilkesboro) all the way to W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir on NC 268 West. Total distance approx. 8.5 miles.
