Elkin Parks & Recreation
Elkin Municipal Park and Elkin Recreation Center is situated in Big Elkin Creek Valley and offers something for everyone.
Located at 399 Highway 268 West, the 25-acre park boasts three ball fields, eight lighted tennis courts, a mile long scenic walking track, a playground, two picnic shelters and a bandshell. Plus, an outdoor swimming pool which is open to the public during the summer months.
Elkin Recreation Center offers indoor basketball, indoor climbing wall, and two fitness rooms with free weights and a multitude of cardiovascular equipment. Through the Recreation Center a variety of youth athletics are offered including: basketball, baseball, softball, flag football, indoor soccer, wrestling, tennis and a kids summer sports camp.
The Elkin Municipal Park system has two other parks in town. Chatham park has a picnic shelter and baseball, softball and soccer fields. Crater Park has a ball field and a multi-purpose field. Plus, Yadkin River access with a public boat ramp.
Stone Mountain State Park
Located on more than 14,100 acres in Wilkes and Alleghany counties, Stone Mountain State Park offers cascading waterfalls and cool mountain streams, quiet forests abundant with wildlife, scenic hiking trails and a historic mountain homestead.
Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain's base.
The Blue Ridge Parkway
Outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most popular units of the National Park System. "America's Favorite Drive" winds its way 469 miles through mountain meadows and past seemingly endless vistas. Split-rail fences, old farmsteads and historic structures complement spectacular views of distant mountains and neighboring valleys. The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than a 25 minute drive from downtown Elkin.
North Carolina State Park System
The North Carolina state park system offers a wide range of educational opportunities and resources. Our Interpretation and Education (I&E) programs engage people in hands-on experiences that promote appreciation and understanding of our states great cultural and natural resources. From nature study hikes to educator training workshops, we offer resources to help guide your learning adventures.
